The town of Monte San Giacomo is located at the foot of the Mt. Cervantes it was founded during the Normanno Era. The territory on which it was founded has been dated to prehistoric times going back over fifty thousand years. The earliest period of development came around the sixteenth century in 1532, when a few noble families began to construct their mansions. Some of whose names are still very predominant in the town today (Marone, Nicodemo, and Gorrese).
The year one thousand was the most difficult times for the region. The barbarians were the first to invade any existing developed society. After the Barbarians came the Longobards, Saraceni, and then the Arabs.
During the sixteenth century with the arrival of the Normanni people the first political, social and economic societies of people were formed. The region which they settled in is now known as Vallo di Diano (Diano Valley). It was chosen for its strategic position to defend itself against outside invaders, and because of the agricultural fertile land. Within the Diano Valley many neighboring towns were born such as Monte San Giacomo. As the times became less dangerous the towns grew below the hills that protected them.
St. Ann was among one of the first churches built. It was constructed near one of the original mountain springs which brought water to the town of Monte San Giacomo and still does so today.
